Video 3: Introduction to Fingernails
Videos 3 -8: The Fingernails
The next 5 videos are about right hand fingernail use. This is a complex subject and takes time and experimentation to get a handle on. It can be overwhelming, and if you’re a beginner, it’s not even necessary to start out using your fingernails. If your right hand fingernails seem too much to deal with at this point, just keep them short enough that they don’t catch on the strings, and skip to Video 8 for now.
This video sets the stage.
- I give some historical info about the use of the fingernails by classical guitarists Tarrega and Segovia, along with a few reasons for developing and using your fingernails.
- I also work hard to make you feel OK about using fake fingernails. Key quote: “if the only thing that can destroy your fingernails is kryptonite, then more power to you.” If that’s not the case, I will go over a number of other options. ping-pong balls, Rico Nails, cosmetic nails (from your local drugstore), Guitar Player Nails (covered in later videos.)
- If you’ve never given your fingernails much thought, I demonstrate the most basic tools you need for shaping and experimenting with your fingernails.
