Video 4: Exercises for Right Hand Articulation & Shifting
In video 3, I separated the production of each “pearl” of sound into three steps:
- Prepare: in which your right hand fingers and nails move into place. (where the nail meets the flesh, of course)
- Shift: in which the left hand fingers move into place, preparing the right pearl for production
- Play: in which the right hand fingers create the pearl and release it into the air
Here are examples of how you can practice this. In addition to practicing shifts, you can turn simple melodies, and portions of your pieces into exercises, using using these same steps.
It can be a bit confusing at first, but keep at it until it clicks for you. Then let go and let your fingers do the work. If things get sloppy after a while, go back and work with preparation some more.
