In this video I introduce some important concepts about how to keep your practicing fresh and constantly alive with new insights, so you don’t get stuck in one place for long. Balancing awareness with analysis is a good way to describe what happens during the process of powerful and productive practice.

Awareness and Analysis feed each other in a cycle.

  • Analysis is a tool: it’s about breaking down the components of what’s happening while you play into manageable parts so you can work with them.
  • Awareness is about feeling and sensing intuitively into everything that goes on as you play, using all of your senses. Most guitar technique teaching focuses on the analysis part of the equation, but cultivating Awareness is actually more fundamental in a very important sense, It keeps your practicing alive with a constant stream of new information, new possibilities.
