Trio Sonatina for Guitar, Violin and Cello

I wrote this Trio for guitarist Tali Roth and her trio Tango Nuevo, and she performed it at Carnegie’s Weil Recital Hall. The Cellist is Chagit Glaser, and the Violinist is Humberto Ridolfi.

Of all the music I’ve written, this is the one I’m the most proud of. I think it begins to fill in a huge gap in the chamber music repertoire for guitar—that gap being music with guitar that other musicians (with plenty of great music to choose from) actually want to play and enjoy working on. Chagit and Humberto really grew to love the piece, and performed it beautifully along with Tali.

There are two other movements in this Trio, but these are the ones that have been performed. They stand on their own as a complete work.

  • I was wondering what the names of the other two movements.

    • JayKauffman

      Thanks for asking, Geofrey..

the movements here are actually the 2nd and 3rd

      movement 1 is a Passacaglia
movement 4 is an increasingly crazed Gypsy Dance (with touches of Klezmer and Mozart)

When will the other two movements be available? I would like to be able to perform the whole piece on tour. Will I have to purchase the other two separately? Thank you for your time

  • This is a great line-up. I’ve also written a milonga for this formation! It’s called Liebergmilonga.
Do you think that Tali Roth and the trio Tango Nuevo might be interested in it, I dare asking?
    Have a nice day

Juan, I’m not sure what Tali is doing these days with Tango Nuevo. After she did this concert, she decided to replace the cello with an electric bass player:) So they never played this piece again, unfortunately. I hope to perform it myself sometime but I can’t promise when.

We are thinking about performing in on tour in Mexico if it works with our concert set.

I would love to see the score if you would like to send it to me.

  • Jay, there is a trio here in Germany -where I live- that is looking pieces for vln + vcl + guit. I can contact you with them if you want (after that, the negotiation is your thing!) Drop me a line, a private message if you want. Or I can give them your webpage adress (this conversation) if you prefer. So they can listen you music and decide… As you want.
    Warm regards
    Juan Maria

      I’ll contact you.
