It’s essential to understand how important mastery of “free stroke,” or tirando, is in classical guitar technique. I see a lot of beginning students get stuck for a very long time trying to apply “rest stroke” technique to almost everything, simply because this is what they were taught first—its easier to learn, and gives you a great sound and a sense of security—but only while playing single line melodies.

In this video I talk about the kind of powerful free stroke you need to learn as a basic skill for classical guitar mastery.  It’s more complicated to learn, and sometimes it takes a long time to set in to the point where you really feel completely comfortable and confident with it—-this could mean many months, years even, if you’re a beginner. But whether you learn this first or not, it’s essential.
